After a full year spent witnessing a slew of recipes go viral on social media giant TikTok, we’ve come to the conclusion that — although some, like the baked feta pasta, are far from delicious — many are deserving of the attention they’ve been getting online.
Although these recipe were initially popularized by TikTok they soon found their way onto Instagram and YouTube. Below, we honor these dishes ― the foods we made at home that tasted just as good as they looked through our screens.
1. It is a tortilla, but it’s actually a quesadilla
The year begins with @crystalscookingfunTikTok posted this video in which she used a flour tortilla to cut out a circle and then placed an ingredient in each quadrant. The food was then folded clockwise, and the mixture was griddled in a panini presse. The result was the following: tortilla-that-is-really-a-quesadilla was bornFollowers began to experiment with different ingredients for the dishes (like this one). You can see hundreds of ways the food was made on film, from breakfast tortillas to savory dishes.
2. Gigi Hadid’s spicy vodka pasta
Because, while pasta preparation may seem simple, the actual cooking of this Italian classic is difficult, we decided not to include it in our list. But this recipe made famous by model Gigi Hadid ― prepared with butter, Parmesan cheese, heavy cream, shallots and vodka ― actually deserves the hype.
3. Nature’s cereal
This one’s pretty easy to follow: Throw some berries in a bowl, add some coconut water and a cube of ice and ― voila! ― you’ve made yourself the cleverly dubbed “nature’s cereal.” We are convinced that this particular recipe made the rounds given its simplicity, which is totally fine by us because how much time can you realistically spend in the kitchen to make yourself breakfast? Bonus points: Even Lizzo swears by it!
4. Corn ribs
You’re likely to have all the ingredients for this recipe at home already, which makes it that much more enticing. This simple dish is a seasoned corn ear cut into ribs. It can be used alone or with your favorite protein. It is a huge success and we are happy to support it.
5. Accordion potatoes
We welcome potato recipes, contrary to our efforts to avoid TikTok pasta and all other types of TikTok. The cutting of the potato is the main focus in this video. Pro tip: Make a bunch of accordions and douse each one in different dressings, including the “traditional” herb and garlic one. Get creative
6. Pesto eggs
This dish can only be made with very high quality pesto, or homemade if you are lucky. This simple recipe will be your new go-to brunch or breakfast meal.
7. Grapes from Watermelon White Claw
If you’ve ever had frozen grapes, you’ll understand the appeal of this variation on the form. These grapes, drenched with White Claw, are a great summer snack or snack. True story. We tried the same snack with hard seltzer instead. The results were delicious.
8. Pickled spicy garlic
This item is added to our list as garlic can be used in almost any recipe to enhance flavor. However, it rarely gets to star. The mixture of hot water, vinegar, salt and sugar is put into a Mason-jar-like container. Some variations may call for Sriracha. Once the container has been filled, fresh garlic pieces are added. You will have an interesting snack that you can enjoy for up to seven days if the mixture is kept in the refrigerator.
9. Two-ingredient chocolate soufflé
This chocolate soufflé can be made using only two items, basically guaranteeing it fame across all echelons of the internet. Not only does it require just eggs and Nutella, but the recipe is incredibly easy to follow ― as long as you know how to separate your egg whites from the yolks.
10. Oats baked
It’s super easy to make these actually good baked oats as long as you have a blender you can throw them in, alongside a banana, an egg, salt, cinnamon and baking powder. Mix it up and then add the chocolate chips or nuts to the bowl. Finally, bake the mixture for around 20 minutes.
11. Mashed Brussels sprouts
We know about smashed potatoes and we’re used to fried Brussels sprouts, but TikTok has taught us a new delicious way to cook the latter vegetable. Since the viral trend is more about technique than actual ingredients to be used, here’s a pro tip: Make it simple and add only lemon juice and zest, salt, garlic and pepper to your Brussels sprouts.
12. Breakfast charcuterie boards
Move over, cheese and meat boards ― it’s time for breakfast charcuterie to take center stage! The dish, which is basically a glorified fruit platter, looks so gorgeous and vibrant that you could spend the entire 2022 scrolling through photos of others setting up their boards.
