Kyle RittenhouseFollowing a jury trial, Friday was a free day. cleared him of murder chargesIn a violent August 2020 altercation, he shot three demonstrators in Kenosha (Wisconsin), killing two.

Parents of Anthony Huber, one of the men Rittenhouse killed, say the verdict left them “heartbroken and angry.”

“Today’s verdict means there is no accountability for the person who murdered our son,” Huber’s parents said in a written statement published after the decision. “It sends the unacceptable message that armed civilians can show up in any town, incite violence, and then use the danger they have created to justify shooting people in the street.”

Huber (26) tried to disarm Rittenhouse, 17-year old, as he fled the scene for his first fatal shooting. He’d just killed Joseph Rosenbaum (36-years-old).

Mark Richards is a defense lawyer argued in the trial that Rittenhouse’s actions were defensible because Huber had a skateboard in one hand while he reached for Rittenhouse’s AR-15 style rifle with the other. The skateboard, he argued, was being wielded as a weapon, thus justifying Rittenhouse’s deadly response.

“No reasonable person viewing all of the evidence could conclude that Mr. Rittenhouse acted in self-defense,” Huber’s parents countered. “In response to racist and violent calls to action from militia members, Mr. Rittenhouse travelled to Kenosha illegally armed with an assault rifle.”

Here’s the Hubers’ statement, in full:

It is a sad and disappointing result that Kyle Rittenhouse has been acquitted of the murder of Anthony Huber. There was no justice today for Anthony, or for Mr. Rittenhouse’s other victims, Joseph Rosenbaum and Gaige Grosskreutz.

We did not attend the trial because we could not bear to sit in a courtroom and repeatedly watch videos of our son’s murder, and because we have been subjected to many hurtful and nasty comments in the past year. However, we watched it closely in the hope that it would give us closure.

It did not take place. Today’s verdict means there is no accountability for the person who murdered our son. This sends the unacceptable message that anyone can incite violence in any community and use the threat they create to justify killing people on the streets. It is our hope that good people join us in rejecting this message and demand more from our law, our officials and our justice system.

Make no mistake: our fight to hold those responsible for Anthony’s death accountable continues in full force. He will be tried by the Kenosha Police who ordered his bloody rampage. Anthony will get his chance in court.

A reasonable person would not conclude from all the evidence that Rittenhouse was acting in self-defense. After being retaliated to by militia members with racist and aggressive calls for help, Rittenhouse traveled illegally to Kenosha equipped with an assault rifle. He threatened other citizens on the street. Although he had been in violation of the curfew, Kenosha officers encouraged him to use violence. Kenosha police told militia members that they would push peaceful protesters toward the militia so that the militia could “deal with them.” Soon after, Mr. Rittenhouse killed Joseph Rosenbaum. Police did not do anything. Confronted by an individual shooting randomly in the street, citizens became concerned and intervened. Anthony received a gunshot to the chest while trying to disarm Rittenhouse. But the police were unable to stop him. Mr. Rittenhouse continued to shoot, maiming Gaige Grosskreutz. Police allowed Mr. Rittenhouse to leave the area without restriction. Kenosha was the destination of Mr. Rittenhouse, who had a gun and wanted to kill. Kenosha police encouraged Rittenhouse to commit violent acts, which led to our son’s death.

Anthony has our complete support and love. His sacrifice of his own life was for the protection of innocent civilians. Keep Anthony in your thoughts.
